What Makes a Room or Single Space Standout

Creating a standout room or space requires more than just furniture and decor—it's about infusing your unique identity into every corner. Discover how to make any room in your home unforgettable by incorporating your personal touch into the six standout items below.

1. The Role of Color

Color can set the emotional tone of a space. Warm hues like red, orange, and yellow create energy and vibrancy, while cool tones like blue, green, and purple offer calm and relaxation. For a tranquil environment, incorporate colors that make you happy, such as spa-like shades like Benjamin Moore's Halo OC-46 or Gray Cloud 2126-60. These choices create a calming atmosphere, especially when paired with tactile elements.

For a more intimate and cozy ambiance, consider moody, deeper colors like Benjamin Moore's Iron Gate 1545 or Sag Harbor Gray AC-95. These rich hues create a sense of safety and comfort, especially when balanced with good lighting.

Adding a bold, bright color to an entertainment area such as a living room or kitchen can infuse your home with liveliness. A splash of color can also highlight specific room features. For instance, a blue-painted island against white cabinets in a kitchen can make the island a standout focal point.

Whites and off-whites like Benjamin Moore's White Dove OC-17, Simply White OC-117, or Swiss Coffee OC-45 are go-to choices for a fresh and airy feel. Monochromatic color schemes can bring peace and simplicity by continuing the color from the walls up into the ceiling.

2. Statement Pieces

Every room should have at least one or more statement pieces—whether it's a piece of art, an accessory, or a unique piece of furniture. Statement pieces add character, charm, and conversation to a space.

Large artwork, such as a painting or sculpture, captures immediate attention, while unique furniture adds shape and personality. Textiles like rugs, window treatments, and accent pillows contribute color and texture, enhancing the impact of your statement piece.

And they don’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Statement pieces can be found while thrifting, or they may be a cherished family heirloom passed down through generations. The key is finding an unexpected piece that stands out.

Once you have chosen your statement piece, it can serve as the foundation of a room's design, anchoring the space and creating a focal point. By carefully selecting color and layout around the statement piece, you allow it to shine.

3. Textures and Materials

As an interior designer, textures are my first love—anything tactile and the layering of materials and textures bring depth and character to a space. By combining different colors, fabrics, sizes, and shapes, you can create contrast and invite touch. Textures engage our senses and set the mood for the room.

Soft textures like fur and velvet offer warmth and coziness, while natural elements like wood provide a welcoming touch. Sleek materials such as glass and marble create a clean, modern aesthetic. Introducing plants is another excellent way to incorporate natural textures and elevate the overall atmosphere of your space.

4. Lighting as a Design Element

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and ambiance of a room, much like color. Mood lighting with dimmers and under-bed LEDs in a bedroom creates a soft, romantic glow. In a living space or entryway, accent lighting can convey grandeur and elegance.

Lighting can be a focal point, such as a chandelier, or it can highlight another point of interest, like illuminating art. I often consult with lighting experts to ensure the right layering of light sources and the perfect level of illumination.

5. Personal Touches

Family photos, heirlooms, vintage pieces, and collectibles make a space your own. Personal touches serve as conversation starters and emotional connections. Incorporating your personal items into your design, like hanging them on a gallery wall or adding them to a shelf design, is a great way to show your personality and individualism in design and truly make your home one-of-a-kind.

6. Harmony and Balance

Cohesion among elements of design invites people into a space and creates a sense of balance. Achieving harmony involves coordinating colors, patterns, textures, and materials to establish a seamless and cohesive flow. Without balance, there is no harmony, which can lead to a feeling of disarray. Ensuring a harmonious design minimizes clutter and allows one to relax in the room and enjoy a peaceful environment.
